This does happen to us, and we've managed to track it down to one particular folder. Please let me know if we can get in touch do get this solved, as it's currently a complete deal breaker for us as its crashing Unity completely.
I've managed to trace down the error to be related to the number of files under a directory. You can work around the issue by not selecting the root directory but rather selecting the sub-dirs one by one and letting P4 create the overlay status icons for them one by one. Once this is completed, selecting the root directory now works again.
FYI: number of files in the problematic dir is 1928, but in dirs with 1650 items or less the error does not occur.

Any feedback on this? Would be good to know the status of this as it's currently halting us from using Perforce.
Still not fixed in latest, crashing in the same fashion in 2015.3.126.3183-Release.
Unchecking "Display status icons" is a workaround, but obviously makes P4Connect less useful overall.
